How to Read a Gram Scale in the Easiest Way

Updated on August 10, 2020 by Howard K. Sauls Leave a Comment

Gram scales are one of the most common items used for both business and personal uses. Although digital scales are much more prominent nowadays, gram scales have made a name for itself since a long time ago.

As gram scales are the most accurate measure of weight till now, it’s certainly going to be of use even in the distant future. In fact, the usual gram scale can be as precise as a tenth of a gram in weight.

If you don’t know how to read a gram scale, then this article will provide you with a simple process of how to measure using a mechanical scale, digital scale, and a triple beam scale.

How to Read a Gram Scale

A Mechanical Scale

This scale uses a spring to determine the mass, force exertion, and resistance of an object without the need for a power supply. Although digital scales can be considered more accurate than a mechanical scale, these scales go down in history as one of the most useful tools invented.

Step 1: Weighing an Item

Place an item on the platform of the scale. The pointer on the dial will determine the weight of that specific item.

These gram scales are usually equipped with kilograms at the top, so it’s simpler to understand if you follow a different value.

Step 2: Determine the Weight

The pointer of the dial moves further to the left as more weight is applied to it. It’s best to determine the kilograms first, before moving onto the grams.

Note down the kilograms first and then add the grams, which you can find on the right of the kilogram. It’s always best to write down the grams along with the kilograms to be more precise, especially for measuring cooking items.

A Digital Scale

Digital scales are the most commonly used type of scales in the market. This type of scale has almost wiped out the use of most other scales other than the triple beam scale.

The precision of these is unmatched, and reading them is much more effortless than any other type of scale.

Step 1: Weighing an Item

A digital scale must always be set on a leveled surface for an accurate measurement. Some scales don’t function until you sit them down on a flat surface.

Put an item on the platform to measure it. The screen will show the exact weight of the item, but this might take a couple of seconds as the number may waver a couple of times before it settles.

Step 2: Read the Measurement

A digital scale weighs about tenth of a gram in whole grams. So, if the reading comes out as 3.05, it would mean it’s 3.5/10 in grams.

Triple Beam Scale

This scale is the best instrument to measure the mass of an item for extreme precision. The name refers to the three beams and their sizes. Each beam carries different weights and reading scales.

And the front beam carries about 0 to 10 grams, the middle beam carries 100 grams, and the last beam can carry 10 beams in increments.

There are also certain parts of the beam that makes this scale much more unique than any other types such as the “riders”, which are pointers that slide to indicate the mass and the “zero adjustment knobs”. This gram scale is also most commonly used for weight body mass, as it can present the most precise result every time.

Triple Beam Scale

Step 1: Weighing an Item

Place and item on the weighing pan. Make sure to observe and note down the three-rider on each of the beam, which will help you calculate the mass.

Step 2: Get a Reading of the Weight

The grams of measurement on a triple beam are calculated together. And the top, middle, and bottom beam can specify each kilogram and a gram of an item. The top is in increments of 100’s, the middle is in the 10s, and the bottom is in tenth.

So, for example, if an item shows 300 in the top, 5 in the middle, and 3 in the bottom, then the weight will be 205.3 in grams. The zero adjustment knob is there to set the scale pointer. Keep adjusting the riders until the pointer reaches zero again.
