20120928 More test shots with the Canon 5D MK III - 1

Here are some test shots taken with the Canon 5D MK III that show you some of the workmen in an old district. Look at the improvement in depth, shape, and color of the subjects. You can also find a lot of detail in some of the shots, such as the tiny bits of dirt on their muscles.

To take these shots, I had to act fast because people are not friendly to candid photographers, in general. Luckily, the silent shutter setting saved the day.

20120926 Faceless - 1

According to recent research, the temperature in the inner urban areas of Hong Kong will rise to 38 degrees Celsius in 30 years’ time. Though the time hasn’t come, I still feel the heat here and now. That’s why people all around bury their faces under umbrellas, and some even forget to share their umbrellas with their beloved (Photo 2). Despite the heat, people still have to earn a living, burying their faces behind their loads (Photos 3 and 4).

Waste scene

20120921 Waste scene - 1

This photograph is of a waste recycling plant in Tai Kok Tsui, an old district of Hong Kong. According to statistics, the city generates around 6.4 million tons of waste each year. What I found here was probably construction waste, and what I found interesting is the furrowed eyebrows of the man standing there. When I say “interesting,” I mean no offense. In fact, I mean “troubled” more than interesting.

I took some more photos in Tai Kok Tsui. Since there are many renovation projects around, I could find lots of construction workers and trucks (Photo 2). It’s not easy to find manual workers taking a break (Photo 3), but their break gave me the chance to shoot them without being scolded.

Old mansions under the afternoon sun

20120919 Old mansions under the afternoon sun - 1

Photographed here is a shop that sells traditional Chinese cutting boards and cake molds. I took this photo at around five o’clock in the afternoon, my favorite time for shooting. The location is Yau Ma Tei, one of the oldest districts in Hong Kong, where you can find old mansions and shops of the last century. The red brick house in Photo 2 is one of the oldest buildings in the city. It is now an office belonging to a nearby theatre that features traditional Chinese operas. As you can see, this old building now rests beside a high-rise residential building. To me, the juxtaposition of it just looks awkward.

I took another photo (Photo 4) to show you the kind of residential building that was prevalent in the last century in this part of the city. I really love the round-edged windows of these mansions. They are classics.
