Big protest

20120727 Big protest - 1

This photo shows the protest held in Hong Kong on July 1. It started at Victoria Park in Causeway Bay. You can see two traffic police officers holding back the traffic outside the park. One of the police officers was staring at me when I took the photo. I took another photo of them from a slightly different angle (Photo 3). People from different walks of life took part in this protest, including children and babies in baby strollers. Media workers in particular worked very hard this day. I shared this experience because carrying photo equipment always wears me out.

20120725 Black and white indoor portrait_Cactus v5 - 1

This is another indoor portrait of Beenolyi, the model I worked with in the piano room a few weeks ago. To set up this photo, I bounced the flashlight off a reflector on the floor about three or four from her face. As for Photo 2, I tried a smaller aperture for a low-key portrait. In addition, the reflector’s angle was slightly different from the angle I used for Photo 1. Then I moved the reflector a bit to the right side of my model and got another photo (Photo 3). As a model, I find Beenolyi sweet and nice, but one thing I must do is direct her to downplay her gestures. So what you see here is her introverted side.

20120720 Beijing photogenic scenes - 1

I found an eye-catching scene here in Beijing that had a mix of colors: blue, brown, red, and even yellow (Photo 1). You can see more colors in another picture here (Photo 2). In fact, I waited at the scene for a while before I took these photos to make sure that the sky was overcast so that my subjects would be evenly lit with ambient light.

Photo 3 was taken when there was harsh sunlight instead so I could capture the shadows on the red door. As for Photo 4, think of it as a typical travel-related photo—the subject posing as some kind of action hero under one of those ancient Chinese monuments.
