20110329 Farewell to the good old days - 1&2

We are always told that our resources so scarce. To people who live in Hong Kong, that means the piece of ‘land’ they are residing on. No joke, the price of land is really, really expensive here. And land developers are consistently and desperately searching for valuable ‘land’ for ‘redevelopment’, which then results in a conflict between people who want to preserve their land and the ‘plan’ that will replace the land with new development, a mall, high rise buildings, and the like.

Land is an abstract word. Actually, what we’re talking about is an old-fashioned street market. In the four photos here, we see a glimpse of this market located in Hong Kong’s Central District. People sell all kinds of fresh fruits and produce. Most of the customers are residents in the neighbourhood and many are middle-aged and older people. I’m sure they love this market.

Some day this area will be replaced by ‘new developments’. And there will be one place less for avid photographers to get their colorful pictures. The color depicted here is so warm and welcoming I should say. They look nice with the ambient light here, fresh fruits, friendly people. Farewell then.

East meet West

20110325 East meet West - 1&2

These two photos were taken in the Central District of Hong Kong. Although the district is known for its financial significance, as many large firms’ main offices are located there, it is also where you can find the city’s most precious monuments. Not only does Antique Street (aka Hollywood Road) present you with the most important ancient Chinese treasures, if you look around the corner you can tell what it was like to live in Hong Kong decades ago.

On Hollywood Road, I found this abandoned store (photo 1). On its rusty gate the words “Chung Sing Photography Company” were written. The gate itself tells you how old the store was when it closed. I captured the wonderful light on the gate. The other photo is the entrance to a small restaurant that makes you think you are in the middle of a small country in Europe. In Hong Kong you can always feel the mix of cultures, which is exactly what makes people interested in the city, especially through the eyes of a photographer.

Island Scene

20110322 Island Scene - 1

It was a coincidence to find this scene in one of the outlying islands of Hong Kong. People on this island love wildlife and cycling. A lot of people came by ferries to the island to spend their weekends and holidays, thereby filling the restaurants with crowds and noises.

It was a rare scene with this man sitting alone behind this crowd of bicycles (Photo 1). And there is no one behind him either! So I should say it was a coincidence to get this image. And as you can see, the lighting was good though it was not arranged or prepared in any sense. The trees get lit, the ground filled with bicycles’ shadows, with stalls lit up perfectly as well. So chances come and one should be ready with the camera!

Photo 2 and Photo 3 were shot standing near the pier watching people come and go. I used the auto function and let the camera determine the shutter speed. Simply wait and see if you like the look and feel of the passerby. And you have to choose the right streets for a scene with good lights around.
