A few years ago, I did a portrait for an action movie star. He was busy on the day of the assignment and asked me to wait for him at his friend’s vintage boutique, located on the fifth floor of an old building with no lift. While walking up the stairs with my heavy gear, I was sweating and thinking how I should approach the assignment.

There was a time when people were all excited about little yellow crystals that were meant to bring luck to one’s love life. To shoot products and accessories like these, a black reflective surface is always useful to create a mirror of the subject. I believe many of you may prefer to take your product shots under studio settings. However, in cases where studio equipment is unavailable, more creativity and spontaneity is needed, often giving the photographer more fun.

You might have heard people say that it is difficult to light a dark object. The same case may apply to shooting light colored objects. A friend once told me that he found it tough to shoot a nice picture of his beloved white cat because it is hard to take a normal exposure on white objects without under-exposing other colors in the picture. Notwithstanding these hardships, such lighting issues will disappear if you can apply a few tricks on exposure adjustments.

We rarely question the source of light of a photo, but in film set lighting, there often exists a working pattern to the source of light. I think it is common practice to create a light source resembling (1) ambient light coming from outside the windows, (2) artificial light from ceiling bulbs, or (3) other lamps in an interior environment. If a location shooting job requires the photographer to shoot under a defined light source, there will surely be less room for creativity.
